about us
Who We Are
Freedom movement Uganda was founded in June 2022 by a group of student and youth activists. Freedom movement emerged on the principle that; to fundamentally defeat oppression, the oppressed people needed to progressively build their power to take action towards this oppression and as well take action towards building new and just communities.
After years of organizing a number of protests and demonstrations against oppressive conditions that included; fees hikes, police brutality and price hikes, we refused to be kept on the reactionary to the oppressive system. In 2022, we chose to revolutionarise our resistance by building an alternative path that should free us from the oppressive and exploitative systems, free the people from surviving on the handouts, withdraw our reliance from the oppressive and exploitative system and define our destiny.
Throughout the second half of 2022, we spent much of our time reflecting on the basic grievances that rooted in our immediate communities outside school, among others were the daily struggle for survival including but not limited to; clothing, food, healthcare, shelter and education. At this moment, the sense of powerlessness to resist the oppression was evident and all seemed like protest alone couldn’t address the people’s material needs and grievances.
Know More About Us
Alongside waging nonviolent campaigns to amplify our grievances and demand hold the duty bearers accountable, we decided to mobilize a few resources to open up a physical infrastructure (Freedom Centre) which we successfully did. This space facilitated our work to initiate constructive programs that included; Free Clothing Program, Community Food Program, and Community Library. With the impact of these programs, they sparked a wider conversion of the communities we want and how the oppressed people can collectively organize and define their own destiny.
These programs expanded and new programs were initiated that included; Free Education Program, and Menstrual Health Program. These programs eventually became alternative to the oppressive systems and a statement to advancing every citizens rights and freedoms.
Freedom Movement Uganda is now organizing to spread out in different regions to make sure that we cover all possible areas and build power of all marginalized communities to take action against the systemic oppression.
Today, our pursuit for accountability and demand for systems change still goes on against the police brutality and pursuit for justice for the victims. Our commitment to social and economic justice is unshaken and our resistance against the high cost of living, the high unemployment rates of the young people, and the exorbitant taxes remains strong and not about stop.
